what is a 301 redirect with seo

The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently. 301 redirect is the most efficient, safest option and Search engine friendly method for webpage redirection. A 301 redirect tells the Search engine to remove the old listing and only keep the new one.

The 301 redirect code tells the user agent that a resource has been moved permanently and will never be available at the old address again. it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page.

Using 301 redirection is the most technically correct, search engine-friendly, and visitor-friendly method that you can use. As well as anything else, you avoid problems with duplicate content and you also preserve your rankings.

This is easy to do using an .htaccess file placed in the root domain of the your website.
